Ice Coverage on the Great Lakes is Down

The warmer winter temperatures much of the Great Lakes region experienced this year were a blessing to some and a curse to others.  Fruit farmers and nurseries took a particularly big hit with the early spring thaw followed by late April frosts.  And the damaging effects may not be over.  The lack of ice on the Great Lakes this winter may impact invasive species populations, native fish spawning, water quality, as well as the commercial shipping industry - and none of it is looking good.

Michigan Watersheds Part of New USDA Initiative

A new initiative by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is targeting improving water quality.  How?  By getting local farmers to implement practices that will protect and improve habitat in specific watersheds.  Two watersheds from Michigan have been included in the program:  Pigeon Creek in Calhoun County and Hayworth Creek in Clinton County.

2012 MI Volunteer River, Stream, and Creek Cleanup Grant Awards

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Great Lakes Commission has announced the recipients of $27,000 in grant funds.  These funds will go towards funding river, stream, and creek cleanup events around the state of Michigan.  Thirteen projects have been awarded funds this year.

Survey Reveals No White-Nose Syndrome in MI...Yet

A recent statewide survey of bat wintering sites in Michigan found no evidence of the fatal fungus that causes white-nose syndrome.  Despite this good news, biologists warn that the arrival of the fungus to Michigan may be just a matter of time.

Officials Push Great Lakes Wind Farms

Five Great Lakes states have teamed up with the Obama Administration to speed up the process for considering plans for offshore wind farms in the Great Lakes.  The agreement will streamline the review of proposed offshore wind projects.  Currently, there are no offshore wind turbines in the Great Lakes.
